David Pottinger
David “Jack” Pottinger (1911–2007) was one of Jamaica’s most celebrated painters, widely regarded for his vivid portrayals of downtown Kingston life and urban culture. Born and raised in Kingston, Pottinger began his artistic journey in the 1940s, developing his talent under the guidance of Edna Manley and quickly becoming a central figure in Jamaica’s emerging nationalist art movement. His work is best known for its rich depictions of everyday city scenes, capturing the energy, dignity, and rhythm of everyday people with expressive colour and form. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Pottinger’s distinct vision and commitment to representing Jamaican urban life earned him a lasting legacy as a master of local painting.
